Banting is a high fat, moderate protein and low carbohydrate lifestyle that promotes the eating of real food. The goal is to eat food that is as close to its natural state as possible – free from processing, additives, preservatives and sugar.
Banting is not a fat fest – it is higher in natural, unprocessed fats than traditional low-fat high carb styles of eating. As each gram of fat accounts for 9 calories versus the 4 calories per gram of protein or carbohydrate, the macronutrient balance of a typical banter’s food intake is leans towards a higher fat intake – with anything from 60 – 80 percent of calories coming from fats.
There are not set meal times with banting – we eat when hungry and until full – not forcing 3 meals and 2 snacks down daily. Many banters naturally progress to 1 or 2 meals per day. Longer periods between meals has been found to be beneficial as this results in reduced production of insulin – the fat storage hormone – and encourages fat burning.
The Banting 7 Day Meal Plans Facebook group has a membership base of over 1.4 million members from across the world, with over 1 million members from South Africa. We are passionate about correcting health through nutrition with a focus on reversing obesity, insulin resistance, PCOS and Type 2 diabetes, yet many members join to gain weight and improve other conditions caused by the inflammatory nature of a high carbohydrate and heavily processed diet.
The tremendous results posted by our banters on a daily basis encourages us to spread the word about this lifestyle. Banting can be followed on any budget, and by people from all cultures and walks of life. The tried and tested recipes featured here are from our members and we thank them all for their contributions.
